Coffee plants sourcing

As I began my coffee farming project in Tenerife, I found myself captivated by the island’s enchanting landscapes and favorable microclimate. However, amidst the allure of this emerging coffee culture, the forgotten history of coffee farming has started to resurface.

Exploring the Forgotten History

While Tenerife now follows the specialty coffee trends, the island’s history of coffee farming has long been overshadowed by other agricultural pursuits. As an experienced coffee professional venturing into coffee farming on the island, I was determined to uncover this hidden narrative, tracing the footsteps of generations past who cultivated coffee in these lands.

Microclimate: Nature’s Gift for Coffee Farming

Tenerife’s microclimate, characterized by volcanic soil, high-altitude terrains, and ideal weather patterns, creates the perfect conditions for coffee cultivation. The gentle trade winds, mild temperatures, and abundant rainfall infuse the beans with exceptional flavors and aromatic qualities.

Preserving and Nurturing the Old Seeds

In my quest for authenticity, I tirelessly searched for original coffee plants scattered across Tenerife. These trees, some over a century old and resilient to the island’s nature and weather conditions, hold the key to preserving the rich genetic diversity of Tenerife’s coffee. Collaborating with a local growers’ company, who will use the coffee cherries I found to grow seedlings, ensures the continuity of these strong, acclimatized genetics.

While Tenerife’s coffee culture may be in its early stages compared to more advanced “new” specialty coffee cultures, the island shows great potential. Embracing sustainability practices and following the global trends in specialty coffee, Tenerife has the opportunity to establish itself as a prominent coffee-growing region.

My journey into Tenerife’s coffee farming has led me to discover the forgotten history that lies beneath the surface. With each step forward, I am driven by the desire to revive and preserve the heritage of coffee farming on this captivating island. Tenerife’s microclimate and the old, strong genetics found in these ancient trees inspire me to cultivate exceptional coffee while prioritizing sustainability. Together, we can restore the flavors, aromas, and stories that were nearly lost to time, honoring the forgotten history and embracing a promising future of sustainable coffee farming on Tenerife.
